Riverbend School
Riverbend Colony School is a small school situated about 20 km southeast of Carberry, Manitoba. It was established in 1969. In the beginning the building served the community both as school and church, a typical; one-room schoolhouse complete with coal stove and outhouse and shiny varnished hardwood floor. There were 9 students, grades 1 to 8, and 1 teacher, Mrs. Dorothy Reynolds. As the student population expanded during the seventies, the church benches in the back moved out and the building became the first in the community with indoor bathrooms.
In 1981, the school was moved onto a basement and there were 2 classrooms and 2 teachers for the 36 students in grades 1 to 9. In the 1980s Kindergarten and grade 10 were added to meet the community’s educational needs. In 1991, 2 more classrooms were built onto the front of the building, giving it its present shape. In 1999, grades 11 and 12 were being taught and the first group of 10 grade 12 graduates left Riverbend School in 2001. The student population dropped sharply in 2002. However, since then, adult education courses have been offered and the school has expanded its technological capabilities to include distance education via the internet, teleconference, and Interactive T.V. It was once again remodeled in 2012 to upgrade the electrical, washrooms and library. Riverbend School has proved to be open to change, in the forefront to meet the needs of the community, and resilient in difficult situations. We also have dreams for the future: another expansion, for instance, to include a gym. This is the place where things can happen! Staff |
